When 13 year-old Logan LaPlante grows up, he wants to be happy and healthy. He discusses how hacking his education is helping him achieve this goal. We should all hope to raise children as "advanced" socially and emotionally as Logan.
WELCOME BACK!
We are so excited for the beginning of a new school year. This year is going to be a challenge, but at the same time we are going to find ways to enjoy the challenges. We will be introducing two online learning resources - Khan Academy and Castle Learning. If you own your own device (iPad, tablet, laptop, iPod, smartphone) be prepared to bring it to school and learn to use it productively! This week the students have been working on a vacation planning project. They are "working" as travel agents putting together vacation packages for families. It has been very eye-opening for them to experience all of the details that must be considered and to stay focused from the point of view of the travel agent and not the vacationer :-)
The students have been working on a Vacation Travelers project. To go along with the project, and get them thinking critically about a particular vacation destination, we will be watching the SeaWorld documentary - "Blackfish". Watch the trailer below. As we kickoff 2014 we will be starting up with new challenges in Percents and Expressions. Take a sneak peek at this Youtube video: WELCOME BACK! This week the Pre-Algebra class will be finishing a graphing unit, solving systems of equations and inequalities.
The Math 7 classes will be finishing Chapter 7 on 3-D figures and preparing for the chapter 7 test. This week all classes will be working on graphing linear equations using various methods, such as creating a table of values, using x-intercept & y-intercept, and slope-intercept form. Here is a helpful video from Khan Academy on the topic. We are so excited that New York State Testing week has finally arrived.
The 3 days in a row that we will spend 90 minutes per day testing is all the math we can handle, there will not be any official homework this week. Those so inclined can visit their Castle Learning account for practice tests to help them prepare on their own. Good Luck Everyone!! During this short (3-day) week, we will be finishing up Chapter 10 and taking the end-of-chapter test, in the Math 7 class. In Pre-Algebra we will continue to prepare for the NYS Math 7 Exam by focusing on proportions and percents. |
